Indian Artisanal Fabrics & Techniques: Ikat

Indian Artisanal Fabrics & Techniques: Ikat

What is Ikat?

Ikat is a traditional dyeing technique that involves resist dyeing yarns before weaving. In Ikat weaving, the yarns are tightly wrapped and tied in specific patterns before they are dyed. These tied areas resist the dye, creating the desired pattern when the yarns are woven together.

The origins of Ikat are debated among scholars. However, it is believed that ikat likely originated in different regions independently, each contributing to its rich and diverse history. The word "ikat" comes from the Indonesian word "mengikat," which means to tie or to bind.

Evidence of Ikat dates back to ancient civilizations in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. It has a rich tradition in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Uzbekistan and in India, with origins in regions like Odisha, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. In Japan, it's known as "kasuri," practiced for centuries, notably in Okinawa.

Ikat fabrics, renowned for quality and luxury, boast unique and vibrant patterns, from geometric motifs to intricate florals. We source our Ikat Fabric from our weaving partners in Telangana.
