On account of World Environment Day, we sat down with our homeboy Arghadeep Barua, a longtime friend of mine, who is a young activist-environmentalist and also happens to be the face of our latest campaign 'Madras Magic'. He is a member of Green Hub - an environmental conservation organization, has been a part of Dehing Patkai movement and currently working to save Deepor Beel in Assam. He is a part of Broadleaf Productions and they make environment and community based films.
When he is not busy saving the environment, Arghadeep serves as the vocalist of the band Bottle Rockets from Assam. He has starred in many award winning Assamese movies including Aamis, Mur Xekh Gaan, Isolated among others.

OOP: In a world that grows increasingly disconnected from one another and from nature, you are someone who has a deep connection with nature. How do you find time to connect with nature in the midst of your busy schedule and what are some of your favorite activities to do outdoors? Why is this important to you?
A: I find solace in recognizing that I'm part of nature, not separate from it. My work revolves around the beauty of the environment, and as a storyteller in music and film, I'm lucky to collaborate with others and explore different places.
My favorite outdoor activities reflect my deep connection with nature. I love the simple joy of lying back and watching clouds drift by, a practice that always inspires me. Forest walks provide a profound cleansing of my mind, body, and soul, as if the trees whisper secrets of rejuvenation. I've also developed a fascination with birdwatching, finding magic in observing these creatures and listening to their calls.
These activities are more than just pastimes; they're my sustenance, motivation, and nourishment for my soul. I'm grateful for the chance to immerse myself in nature and share its stories with the world.
OOP: What are some simple things that people can do to be kinder to the environment?
A: It's time to shed the illusion of separateness from nature. As David Attenborough said, "No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced." This quote encapsulates our relationship with the environment. To foster this connection and stewardship, we must first show kindness to ourselves. Simple yet profound acts like conscious breathing and mindful eating can increase our awareness of our consumption habits, leading to wiser choices that benefit both us and the natural world.

OOP: For Earth Hour last year you and your band, Bottle Rockets India, performed during the switch-off using solar lights and candles. Sounds like an amazing idea for a tour. Have you considered taking this to other places this year?
A: I've had the privilege of working with WWF and their Earth Hour campaign for some time, which has been incredibly rewarding. Our band, Bottle Rockets India, has performed for the campaign twice, experiencing the unique sensation of switching off from our tech-filled world. Being part of Earth Hour allows us to contribute to a larger movement for positive change. We dream of touring to spread our music and message of environmental stewardship and mindfulness to wider audiences.
OOP: What is your musical process when it comes to writing?
A: Collaboration is the heartbeat of our creative journey, from scribbling lyrics in school to crafting songs for our band today. Our process is fluid, reflecting the ebb and flow of inspiration—sometimes sparked by a lingering melody, a guitarist's riff, or a bassist's fragment of thought. Dreaming forms the cornerstone of my creative process, where imagination takes flight and ignites inspiration. We continue to dream, create, and weave our stories into the fabric of sound.
OOP: Your favorite movies about nature?
A: Two films that have left a lasting impact on me are "Honeyland" and "The Queen of Trees." "Honeyland" is a poignant documentary about the last beekeeper in Northern Macedonia and her deep connection with nature. "The Queen of Trees" is an experiential journey I highly recommend, available on YouTube.
Special mentions go to "The Jungle Book" and "Princess Mononoke," which hold unique places in my heart for their timeless themes and captivating storytelling.

OOP: How was it shooting with our brand and Samlam, a specially abled model?
A: My acquaintance with Shivani Baa has deepened my appreciation for her brand's philosophy of sustainability and handcrafted work, leading to a fulfilling collaboration. Believing in conscious choices, I enjoyed being part of the shoot for "Our Own Pace." Anubhav, a dear friend, brought infectious positivity to the experience, enhancing the joy of working together.
I extend heartfelt gratitude to Shivani Baa for the collaboration with Samlam, whose presence on camera was captivating. Kudos to "Our Own Pace" for embracing accessibility by working with Samlam, who has a listening impairment, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and diversity in our creative endeavors.
I'm grateful for the chance to contribute to meaningful projects and look forward to future collaborations. I also urge support for Shishu Sarothi, a remarkable organization championing the rights of children with disabilities in the northeast since 1987. Their tireless work deserves our attention and support.
